The format for the \notereferencegutter command is: \footnoteformat{ \notereferencegutter{xx} } Where "xx" is any number and valid TeX measurement (in, pc, pts, etc.). \notereferencegutter{1em} is the default and will give one emspace between the footnote reference numbers and the text of the notes.
