Select an image
Ubuntu is distributed on seven types of images described below.
Desktop image
The desktop image allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of image is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 1024MiB of RAM to install from this image.
For 64-bit ARMv8 processors and above.
Server install image
The server install image allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer for use as a server. It will not install a graphical user interface.
For 64-bit ARMv8 processors and above.
PowerPC64 Little-Endian server install imageFor POWER9 and POWER10 Little-Endian systems.
RISC-V server install imageFor RISC-V computers. Requires copying your own first stage bootloader (like u-boot) and relevant DTBs onto the image before usage on real hardware (like the SiFive HiFive Unmatched).
IBM System z server install imageFor IBM System z series mainframes, such as IBM LinuxONE.
Netboot tarball
The netboot tarball contains files needed to boot the Ubuntu installer over the network.
For 64-bit ARMv8 processors and above.
PowerPC64 Little-Endian netboot tarballFor POWER9 and POWER10 Little-Endian systems.
RISC-V netboot tarballFor RISC-V computers. Requires copying your own first stage bootloader (like u-boot) and relevant DTBs onto the image before usage on real hardware (like the SiFive HiFive Unmatched).
IBM System z netboot tarballFor IBM System z series mainframes, such as IBM LinuxONE.
WSL image
The WSL image is the root filesystem to be installed and launched by the Windows Subsystem for Linux.
For 64-bit ARMv8 processors and above.
Preinstalled desktop image
The preinstalled-desktop image allows you to unpack a preinstalled version of Ubuntu onto a target device.
For modern Raspberry Pi boards (Pi 3, 4, 5, CM4, and Zero 2 W).
Preinstalled server image
The preinstalled-server image allows you to unpack a preinstalled version of Ubuntu onto a target device.
For modern Raspberry Pi boards (Pi 3, 4, 5, CM4, and Zero 2 W).
RISC-V preinstalled server imageFor RISC-V computers. Requires copying your own first stage bootloader (like u-boot) and relevant DTBs onto the image before usage on real hardware (like the SiFive HiFive Unmatched). Usable on RISC-V QEMU.
RISC-V for SiFive HiFive Unmatched preinstalled server imageFor RISC-V computers, with support for SiFive HiFive Unmatched.
RISC-V for Allwinner Nezha preinstalled server imageFor RISC-V computers, with support for Allwinner Nezha
RISC-V for Sipeed LicheeRV Dock preinstalled server imageFor RISC-V computers, with support for Sipeed LicheeRV Dock
