Dependancies ....

This package contains all the latest packages needed to run gwebdec.

GWebDec-0.22 depends on at least

WebMan-0.22.0 (please read new example config file supplied AND below)
WebDec-0.44.3 (minor bug fix release of webdec 0.44)

GTK 2.0 or later
GLIB 2.0 or later
GDK 2.0 (not sure if this is seperate to the GTK library)

(if your technical, GLIB needs to be built with thread support).

Please have these installed before you start installing gwebdec.

Notes on webman 0.20.3,

The config file has changed yet again ....
I recomend you move your existing config file (~/.webman) to a backup location then just run gwebdec(the new version included with this package!!)to generate a new style config file and edit the values, an explantion of the config file can be found in doc/manual/config.html.

The standard system for storing the extracted images with webman
0.12.1 and earlier was to extract all images to BACKGROUNDS_PATH.

With 0.20 the images are stored in a structured directory layout.

0.12

BACKGROUNDS_PATH/<all images>

0.20

BACKGROUNDS_PATH/
----------------/all/<all images>
----------------/collections/
----------------------------/Daily Photos Febuary 2003/
------------------------------------------------------/ <sym linked images to <all> >
------------------------------------------------------/thumbs <thumbnail images>
------------------------------------------------------/nfo <the extracted meta data>

By changing the directory structure there are going to be problems updateing to
the new system.

WebMan will automaticaly create <all>,<collections> and subdirectorys for you,
I recomend before you install webman 0.20 to create the "all" directory in
BACKGROUNDS_PATH and move(or copy) all your existing images into it.

Now when you use the new webman you will have a single directory with your
images in you can use for screen savers etc.

Unfortunatly your existing images will not appear in the gwebdec interface, only
new images you download with webman 0.20 will be added to the gui.

GWebDec

OK, on with the fun.

Before you start you should realise that the gui at the moment is
limited to a simple "wallpaper manager" style functionality. You
will be able to download images and view them in the gui and set them
as your wallpaper, that will be about it for this early version.
This release is more about seeing how the gui performs speed wise,
what you, the user thinks of the gui interface so far(very similar to webshots!),
system compatability and of course any bugs you can find :)

OK on with the GUI ...

tar -zxpvf gwebdec-0.10.X.tar.gz
cd gwebdec-0.10.X
make
<lots of build stuff happens>

you should now have executable files called gwebdec, webman and webdec hidden away in the source directorys.

To install you can type
make install (as root)

This installs the files in /usr/bin. To change this please edit the Makefile to change the INSTALL_PATH line at the top.

If it didnt build for some reason(no GTK development librarys installed ?) I
have supplied a pre-built binary.

Now some more on webman and config files.

GWebDec uses the same config file as webman, so what ever you set up in the
config file as the selected wm is what gwebdec will use. If you set
BACKGROUND to NO then gwebdec wont set the background on single image
downloads. Its important to realise that the gui uses BACKGROUND_COMMAND
irespective of BACKGROUND when you double click an image in the GUI so it
should be set.

Another effect of using webman is that when the gui isnt running webman still
sets your backdrop, when the gui is running all relevant data from webman
is sent to the gui and the gui sets the wallpaper. This is to plan for the
future wallpaper rotating functionality.

OK, now you can fire up the GUI and have a play :)

Planned features for future versions(I know you would mail them to me otherwise)

1) A nice configuration dialog for the webman config file
2) Allow you to double click on the details preview image to set the wallpaper
3) An about dialog :)
4) The wallpaper rotation .... with config dialog
5) Screensaver stuff .. will have to think this one out more
6) What ever enough of you sugest and I like the sound of :)
